A Collaboration in Clay
Josie and Charlotte often visit scenic places across Britain together and have been working on some collaborative pieces inspired by their travels. Expressive mark making collides with curvaceous forms on affectionately named ‘Pebble Postcards’; these pieces are a joyful experiment, celebrating shared passions.
Walking, and sometimes scrambling through landscapes, embracing the elements, capturing the heart of a place are interests both artists share. These experiences in and around nature inform their own practices and here, for the first time, they are joining forces to create unique pieces; inspired by Orkney, thrown by Charlotte and painted by Josie.
The pebble-like forms are reminiscent of the humungous round boulders found on Rackwick Bay, that only dwarf in comparison to the dramatic cliffs surrounding them. The painterly mark making hints at the wild, rugged landscapes, from sea stacks at Yesnaby, to views across turquoise seas of far-off islands. This collaboration has allowed the artists to stop and consider what elements comprise a landscape, how to convey the scale and soul of a place. Like treasuring a shell collected from a beach, the pebble pots are memories of a place, a moment in nature, to collect and treasure.
