Definition

I am interested in the colours and shapes created when sunlight filters through tree canopies. There isn’t one word that describes this in the English language, however in Japanese it is called Komorebi.

I have always been drawn to the luminescence of sunlight filtering through trees. The yellow green glow feels very magical and otherworldly. I have found that the large variety of plants on display in glasshouses make them particularly special places to see Komorebi in effect, and this has inspired many of my paintings of tropical plants.
