Komorebi: (The Japanese word to describe sunlight filtering through trees.)
The ‘Komorebi’ series is an ongoing project inspired by tropical and temperate plants growing in glasshouses. The paintings below are painted from photographs I took at Kew Gardens and Oxford Botanic Garden.
I have always been drawn to the luminescence of sunlight filtering through trees. The yellow green glow has a nostalgic quality reminiscent of childhood . The large variety of plants on display in the glasshouses make them particularly special places to see Komorebi in effect.
The bands of colour at the top and bottom of the paintings reference both the original photographs, and the structure of the glasshouses offering to the viewer a window into another world.
